Types of QR Codes

What Is a Static QR Code?

A static QR code encodes its final destination directly in the pattern itself, with no redirect service involved — it's free to create, works forever, and never depends on a third-party server staying online, but the destination can't be changed once it's printed.

Because everything's baked into the pattern at creation time, a static QR code is really just data made visual — the exact same code will decode to the exact same content in ten years as it does today, as long as whatever it points to (usually a URL) still exists.

This is the type of QR code this site's generator produces. For most real-world uses — business cards, menus, packaging, event materials — a static code is the right and cheaper choice; if the destination needs updating later, update the page at that URL rather than the code itself.
