QR Code Aspect Ratio and Orientation

A standard QR code is always a perfect square — a 1:1 aspect ratio — and that's not a stylistic choice, it's structural: the grid of modules and the three corner finder patterns only work correctly when width and height are equal. The square code can sit inside a rectangular design layout without stretching, and it scans correctly at any rotation angle.

The squareness comes from how the code is built, not from a design template. Every QR code is a grid of an equal number of rows and columns — modules — starting at a version 1 code (21×21 modules) and growing in equal steps up to version 40 (177×177 modules). The three large square finder patterns sit in three of the four corners specifically so a scanner can establish orientation and boundaries; that only works reliably on a symmetrical, equal-sided grid. Stretch a QR code into a rectangle and those finder patterns lose their fixed geometric relationship to each other, which breaks detection — this is why no legitimate QR generator, including QRSen, offers a non-square output.

This causes a common point of confusion in design software: someone drops a QR code into a rectangular business card or flyer layout and wonders whether the code needs to match those proportions. It doesn't, and shouldn't. The code stays a square within the layout — sized to fit comfortably inside the available space with margin around it — while the rest of the design around it can be any shape. Stretching the square to fill a rectangular placeholder distorts the module grid and will very likely break scanning; resizing it uniformly, keeping height and width equal, is the only safe way to make it bigger or smaller.

Orientation is a separate question from aspect ratio, and QR codes handle it gracefully. Because the three finder patterns are placed asymmetrically — in three corners, not four — a scanner can always determine which way is 'up' regardless of how the code is rotated. That means a QR code printed upside down, sideways, or at an odd angle on a rotated product label will still scan correctly; the decoding software works out the correct orientation from the finder pattern positions before reading the data.

Every standard QR code size — from the smallest version up to the largest — keeps this same 1:1 ratio; only the total module count changes as the code holds more data. Micro QR codes, a smaller relative, also stay square, just with a different corner-marker structure. The square shape is one of the more reliable, non-negotiable facts about how QR codes work, which makes it a safe thing to design around.

If a design genuinely calls for a code that reads as circular or rounded, the safe way to get that look is a decorative frame or background shape placed around a normal square code — the functional grid stays untouched and square, while the surrounding artwork carries the rounded visual impression. This achieves the intended aesthetic without touching the one geometric property the QR standard requires.
