How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone or Android
On an iPhone, open the Camera app and point it at the code — no separate scanner app needed since iOS 11. A yellow-bordered banner appears at the top of the screen; tap it to open the link. On Android 9 and later, most phones do the same thing directly in the Camera app or through Google Lens built into the camera or search bar.
iPhone scanning has been built into the stock Camera app since iOS 11, released in 2017, so any iPhone running a reasonably current version of iOS already has this. Open Camera, hold the phone steady about six to ten inches from the code, and wait a second. A notification banner with the destination link slides down from the top of the screen — tap it to open. If nothing appears, check Settings, then Camera, and make sure "Scan QR Codes" is toggled on; it's on by default but can get switched off.
Android's path is slightly less uniform because manufacturers customize the camera app differently, but the underlying capability is the same across Android 9 (Pie) and later. On Pixel, Samsung, and most other modern Android phones, opening the Camera app and pointing it at a QR code triggers a small popup with a link preview — tap it to continue. Some phones route this through Google Lens instead, which shows up as a small icon inside the Camera app or directly in the Google search bar or widget. Either path works the same way: point, wait, tap.
If a phone doesn't show any recognition at all, the two most likely explanations are an older OS version (pre-iOS 11 or pre-Android 9) or a manufacturer build that removed the feature, which is rare but not unheard of on some budget Android devices. In that case, a free scanner app from the App Store or Google Play fills the gap and works identically once installed — point, get a popup, tap. There's no meaningful difference in scan reliability between a good dedicated app and a modern phone's native camera.
This is a companion to a broader point worth making explicitly: most people scanning a QR code today don't need to think about apps at all, because the capability already lives in the camera they open dozens of times a day. Installing a dedicated scanner is really only useful in a handful of professional or bulk-scanning contexts, not for everyday use.
One small but genuinely useful habit: before tapping through on any scanned link, glance at the preview URL the phone shows first. Both iOS and Android display the destination address before opening it, and that half-second glance is enough to catch an obviously wrong or suspicious domain before a scan turns into a visit — especially relevant for codes encountered in public places like parking meters or flyers, where a code can occasionally be tampered with or covered by a second, malicious sticker.
