How Scanner Design Affects QR Reading
Native phone camera apps and dedicated scanner apps can behave differently when reading the same QR code — differences in autofocus minimum distance, decode speed, and how aggressively they attempt to recover a damaged or obstructed code all affect real-world scan success.
This is why testing a QR code with only one device before a print run is risky: a phone with excellent close-focus autofocus might read a small code easily, while an older or budget device struggles at the same distance. Dedicated scanner apps built for retail or logistics are often tuned for speed and can be less forgiving of a damaged or low-contrast code than a general phone camera app, which tends to try harder before giving up.
Autofocus behavior varies more than most people expect between phone models and even between camera app versions on the same phone. Some devices lock focus quickly at close range but struggle at arm's length or further, while others handle a wider focus range comfortably, which directly affects how small a printed code can be before it becomes unreliable on a specific device.
Decode-attempt persistence also differs: a general-purpose phone camera app tends to keep trying to resolve a code even when partially obscured or at an awkward angle, since consumer expectations favor "it just works" behavior. Purpose-built retail or logistics scanners are often tuned instead for speed and throughput at a fixed, predictable angle and distance, trading some of that forgiveness for faster processing on codes that are expected to be in good condition.
Screen versus print reading is another scanner-design factor worth knowing: some dedicated scanners (particularly older retail hardware using a laser rather than a camera sensor) struggle to read a QR code displayed on a phone or tablet screen, due to glare or refresh-rate interference, even though the exact same code prints and scans fine on paper. This matters for anything meant to be scanned directly off a screen, like a mobile boarding pass or a digital ticket.
