QR Code vs RFID: What's the Difference?
A QR code is a printed visual pattern that any phone camera can read, while RFID uses a physical chip and antenna that communicates over radio waves with a dedicated reader. QR codes are free to produce and need no special hardware to scan, but RFID doesn't require line-of-sight or anyone actively pointing a camera at it.
RFID works through a tiny chip and antenna embedded in a tag or sticker. A dedicated reader device emits a radio signal, and the chip responds with its stored ID, no camera or visual scanning involved at all. Because it's radio-based rather than optical, RFID can be read through certain materials, without precise aiming, and often automatically as a tagged item passes near a reader, which is how automated toll payment, warehouse inventory scans, and retail security tags work.
QR codes are purely visual by contrast, printed ink or displayed pixels that any camera with decoding software can read. Because virtually every smartphone already has a capable camera, there's no proprietary reader hardware to buy and no per-tag material or chip cost, a QR code is essentially free to produce in unlimited quantity, unlike an RFID tag which has real manufacturing cost built into every physical unit.
The practical tradeoffs run in opposite directions. RFID's passive, automatic reading is genuinely useful when you want bulk tracking with no human involved, pallets moving through a warehouse, a security tag on retail merchandise. QR's requirement that a person deliberately point a camera at it is actually a feature in contexts built around consent and choice, a menu, a business card, a marketing poster, where you want the customer to decide to engage rather than being tracked passively.
In short, RFID suits scenarios needing automated reads without anyone actively interacting: inventory, access control, contactless transit passes. QR suits scenarios built around a person choosing to engage: menus, packaging, marketing campaigns, event check-in. NFC, which also uses radio waves, actually sits closer to QR in practice than to RFID more broadly, since it's designed around short-range, deliberate taps rather than passive bulk reading.
Cost is a real, practical part of this decision too. A QR code costs nothing beyond the ink and paper or screen space it occupies, since the pattern itself has no manufacturing cost — the same generator produces one code or a million at effectively zero marginal cost per code. RFID tags, by contrast, have a real per-unit hardware cost built into every physical tag, which adds up meaningfully at the scale of tagging every item in a large inventory, making QR the more economical choice whenever the use case doesn't specifically require RFID's passive, automatic reading.
