QR Code Placeholders and Test QR Codes: What They're For and How to Make One

Every QR code is a real, scannable code — there's no special "placeholder mode" in the QR standard that renders a code inert. So when someone says they need a "QR code placeholder" or a "blank QR code," they're usually after one of a few different, very solvable things: a visual mockup that looks like a QR code without needing to work yet, a genuinely scannable example for a template or design comp, or a real code they can test their scanning setup against. This guide covers all three.

"Placeholder" usually means one of three things

A visual stand-in for a design mockup. You're laying out a menu, a flyer, or a business card in design software, and you need something QR-shaped in the corner before the real destination link exists yet. This doesn't need to scan to anything meaningful — it just needs to look right.

A genuinely working example code. You want a real QR code to demonstrate what one looks like, test a print run, or show a client — but the content behind it doesn't matter yet. This does need to scan, just not to anything permanent.

A test code for your own scanning setup. You're building or testing a QR scanner (an app, a checkout kiosk, an event check-in system) and need a reliable, known code to scan against while you debug — a real code with predictable, simple content.

Making a real placeholder QR code

For the second and third cases — anything that actually needs to scan — the simplest approach is to generate a real QR code pointing at something harmless and obviously temporary, rather than trying to fake one. A few options that work well:

  • Link to your own homepage or a "coming soon" page. Real, scannable, and if someone stumbles across the printed mockup before launch, it goes somewhere sensible rather than nowhere.
  • Encode plain text instead of a URL. A QR code doesn't have to hold a link — encoding a short string like "Test QR code — QRSen" produces a real, scannable code that just displays text on the scanning phone instead of opening a page.   • Start with the simplest possible content. A short plain-text string or a short URL is easier to debug scan failures against than a long, data-heavy payload like a full vCard.
  • Test across error-correction levels deliberately.
