Color rules that guarantee scannability

QR scanners work by detecting contrast between dark modules and the light background. Four rules guarantee your design stays scannable:

  • Dark code on light background, always. Never invert this. A white code on a dark background will fail with most consumer camera apps.
  • Maintain a contrast ratio of at least 3:1. Use a contrast checker to verify the ratio between your code color and background. 4.5:1 or higher is ideal.

If your code will be printed smaller than 2 × 2 cm, use Square or Dots. The more organic styles can occasionally cause issues at very small sizes with low-quality prints.

The quiet zone rule

The quiet zone is the white border around the QR code pattern. It is not decorative — it is functional. Without a sufficient quiet zone, scanners cannot locate the code boundaries and will fail to read it.

The QR standard specifies a minimum quiet zone of 4 modules on all sides — roughly 1.5–2 mm at a 3 cm print size.

  • Never crop the quiet zone for aesthetic reasons.
  • If your design has a background pattern extending to the edge, place the QR code on a white rectangle that extends at least 4 modules beyond the code boundary.
  • When placing a QR code inside a coloured box, add enough padding that the quiet zone stays fully white.

Error correction and logos

Common mistakes to avoid

These are the design errors that appear most frequently on printed QR codes in the wild:

  • Inverting colours (white code on dark background). Looks striking, scans unreliably. Never do this.
  • Low-contrast brand colors on white. If your brand color is yellow, gold, or any light pastel, use black for the QR code and apply your brand elsewhere on the design.
  • Rounded print crops cutting the quiet zone. Very common on business cards with rounded corners. Increase the quiet zone or move the code further from the edge.
  • Using JPG format for print. JPEG compression introduces artifacts that can blur individual modules. Always use SVG for print production.
  • Not test-scanning before printing. Scan on both iOS and Android native cameras — most customers use the built-in camera, not a dedicated QR app.
  • Exporting at 72 dpi from design software. Print requires 300 dpi minimum. SVG sidesteps this entirely since it has no pixel resolution.
